RIP Alexander McQueen

It has been said that he took his own life.

This is such a terrible loss to the artistic community.

He was a true genius, artist and visionary. He will go down in history as a pioneer, and will be greatly missed.

I am so sad.

A source at the designer's office has confirmed his death, telling British newspaper The Daily Mail: "It is a tragic loss. We are not making a comment at this time out of respect for the McQueen family."

Alexander was left devastated when his mother passed away on February 2. He admitted he was having trouble dealing with her death, but was committed to moving on with his life.

Alexander was born in London. He started making dresses for his three sisters as a child and left school aged 16 to pursue a career in fashion.

After a stint in Italy, he returned to England and studied for a Masters degree in fashion design at London's prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.

In 1996, he was appointed the head designer at Givenchy, where he worked in until March 2001. He then founded his own eponymous label and has since won countless awards. He went on to be awarded a CBE, as well as being named International Designer of the Year at the Council of Fashion Designer Awards.

He was devastated when his close friend Isabella Blow committed suicide in May 2007, and frequently talked about her death.
