Trend Forecast -SteamPunk

Yo Yo YOooo,

So you know steampunk? Its way ace..

It's basically a subculture that takes inspiration from neo-romanticism and the 19th Century steam powered era. SteamPunkers infuse an element of fantasy into their interpretation of that time, a hyper tech speculative history- they've rewritten it and created a world where gadgetry and industrialization influences every aspect of life, science can be twisted to meet any need and time travel is a reality.
Anyhoosey- this complex subgenre has taken on a very distinct fashion style characterized by cogs, brass instruments and Georgian/Victorian/Old Western costumery. Suffice to say its a bbiit of an effort to pull off (involving gluing brass cogs and screws onto all your goggles and top hats). Its very Burton-esque, and a kind of an extension of the Gothic look.

But as a starting place for interpretation into mainstream/high fashion trends, there is wealth of inspiration in the artwork from the Steampunk movement. You see bits of it trickling into the current shows and influencing the cutting edge designers.. Designers like Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier and Dior have all used subtle SteamPunk references in their recent work.

STYLE TIP: Mix a subtle steampunk reference into your look, teamed with clashing patterns, unpredictable textures and a pair of old beat up boots. Hot.
